Troy Clifford Dargin, born in Germany was a son of military parents. He grew up in the Midwest and holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Education in Vocal Music and a Bachelor’s of Science in Theatre Performance graduating Cum Laude from Northwest Missouri State University. He holds a Master’s degree in Music from University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, a Master’s in Music Education (MME) in Vocology from University of Kansas, a Master of Arts in Speech Language Pathology at the University of Kansas, and currently is a PhD candidate at University of Kansas studying Speech Pathology focusing on the performing voice. Dargin is also known as a performing artist, having played Evelyn in “Anything Goes”, Philostrate in “Midsummer Nights Dream”, to name only a few, and has toured professionally across the country with Omaha Theatre Company for Young People. Dargin also holds a Modeling Certificate from John Casablanca’s Studio having placed in competitions in NYC over two decades ago before he started his pursuit in academia. Best known for his singing voice, his voice has been described as “rich and powerful with beautiful legato line”. Troy became involved with dogs when he was a child and competed in Junior handling where he consistently placed in the Midwest top rankings. Troy has bred 78 home-bred Shih Tzu champions to date with 4 Grand Champions and is currently active in the breed.
He has won the coveted “Lainee Top Producing Brood Bitch” award twice in the same year with two of his bitches tying for the award in the same year. He owns a bitch that tied for #7 all time top producing bitch in the breed *(American Shih Tzu Club p. 295 Historical Record book 2012-2013). He has had dogs in the top 10 throughout his tenure in the sport of dogs. His “Falling Star” kennel prefix has numerous Group 1 and ROM awards to its credit. Having a background in education and Junior showmanship Troy loves to judge Juniors and has been doing so since he aged out of Juniors. Currently Troy is authorized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) to judge the following: 1) Toy Group; 2) 9 Non-Sporting breeds (Boston Terriers, Bulldogs, Chinese Shar-Pei, Dalmatians, Keeshonden, Lhasa Apsos, Poodles, Tibetan Spaniels, and Tibetan Terriers); 3) 2 Sporting breeds (Cocker Spaniels, Weimaraners); 4) Miscellaneous Group; 5) Junior Showmanship; 6) Best In Show.
Troy has had the privilege of judging some prestigious assignments including an all-breed show the day before (Dec. 10, 2009 in Long Beach, CA) Eukenuba AKC National show, a Papillion specialty hosted by the Papillion Club of America during Westminster weekend on Feb. 13, 2011, and a Chinese Crested Specialty during the National weekend (Chinese Crested Club of Greater Los Angeles in Primm, NV on May 18, 2012) to name only a few.
Troy founded Falling Star Shih Tzu in 1985. At age 15 he studied with a professional handler, Clive Harrold, as an assistant professional handler in California. Troy has acted as a breeder, owner, and professional handler, and judge throughout his debut in the sport of dogs. His “Falling Star” Shih Tzu line has taken him all over the United States, including Puerto Rico and Alaska, and Canada. He also has had several dogs finish their international championship title. Troy is mainly a breeder of Shih Tzu but has also bred 1 litter of Havanese and finished 1 Havanese homebred championship title. As a professional handler he has shown most of the Toy breeds and some non-sporting breeds, along with several breeds from other groups including Shetland Sheepdogs.
